Daily Driver

August 29, 2011

Dear Pat,

I’ve been neglecting you and this blog.

Unfortunately, I really have no excuse.  Laziness isn’t an excuse, but thats why I’ve been absent. It’s incredible that I feel like blogging is something that takes up my time.  It really only takes 5-10 minutes and you are updated on me, and I’m updated to the world.

Throughout this blog I have done some serious changing.  I moved to LA. I’ve learned new things. I’ve gone through psychological and physical growth. And I’ve gotten new cars.

If you remember about two years ago I made a post about my Lumina after getting rid of the Infinity.  Then later in the year, I got a Santa Fe in order to get out to LA.

But now I am an LA driver (got my license to prove it!), so I needed an LA car. An LA car is much different then an ohio car.  With LA cars you’re not looking for something practical, or reliable, or even safe.  You are looking for something dope.

I got a datsun

Photos by the wonderful Brian Olinger, who also helped me make sure this car wasn’t a total dud. So many thanks to him.

Anyway, get stoked to ride in style.

adore and disorder,

Screen Grabs

Jonny,

As you know, I shot a little film last weekend. It was a blast. Here are a few uncorrected screen grabs to keep you informed.

Hope you dig em.

Technology

August 8, 2011

Jonny,

I’m currently making a short film that deals with a lot of technological themes. Mainly how people nowadays seem so dependent on technology that they forget how to interact in person.

So it’s a little ironic that this is easily the film I’ve used the most technology on.

Here is an example. Jeff Kolada, my DP, lives in New York. I live in Baltimore. We have been exchanging emails and phone calls and texts periodically throughout the process. But that is pretty simple. Everyone does that. Then today we decided to have a meeting. We couldn’t meet in person, but we still wanted to be able to draw and show things to each other as if we were at the same table.

Enter Dabbleboard. This is a cool website where you can share different digital pices of paper in real time. So we both got on skype, chatted to each other, and when we needed to we would draw things out such as storyboards. Here are a few images:

This was by far our best picture

Then things got really crazy. Jeff wanted to show me something on his computer, so in Skype he shared his screen with me. I saw everything he saw!

And he's on photoshop too!

Also, lets get crazier. Jeff was mainly operating Dabbleboard from his iPad! And some of his emails from his phone! And as we worked we even discovered a few more ways we could have been working together through the internet, like our shot list could have been a shared document so we would only have to make the changes once!

Anyway it was a ton of technology and we were relying on it pretty heavily. Which goes against everything this movie is about… but what are you going to do?

Cartoon 4

August 7, 2011

Jonny,

These are getting harder and harder. Today’s is particularly uninspired.

Cartoon 3

August 5, 2011

Jonny,

Here is today’s cartoon. This is what I do at work. I’m going to try to make this a regular thing. It’s fun for me. If you find them unfunny then it’s probably not fun for you.

Today a child poured jello into his water bottle to make his water taste like jello. That’s pretty awesome.

Dear Jonny,

Here is today’s cartoon for you.

The best part of this picture is the dogs cheating. That’s hilarious to me.

Jonny,

Since you seem to have abandoned this blog, I’m picking up the slack. Here is a cartoon I made today.

Also I’m hard at work on a new short film. Here is a picture of a room before it has been turned into a set.

That’s all for today. Now get back in the blogging game!

Symbolism

July 25, 2011

Jonny,

Lately I’ve been noticing a lot of symbolism in TV and movies. One show that does it a lot (maybe even a bit too much) is Boardwalk Empire. Check out this screengrab.

Anyway, you should write some entries.

Music

July 12, 2011
by

Jonny,

I realize we don’t talk about music much. I understand why, a lot of people are very defensive about their music and like to fight about it and swear their choices are better than yours. Which brings up a good point, my music is better than yours.

But I figured instead of comparing music, I’d just tell you what I have been listening to as of late:

A Tribe Called Quest

There is a documentary about these guys that just came out. I haven’t seen it, but I got some of their tunes. It’s all really enjoyable early 90s hip hop. I was going to post a video, but the cover art is so pretty I’m gonna let you google them yourselves. Listen to “Can I Kick It?”

Cults: They are my favorite driving music as of late. They make me forget about the day of camp that lies ahead.

Head and the Heart: These guys play on my radio station a lot at home. I like this song.

So yeah, those are three things I’m currently into.

Also, here is the commercial I made a few weeks ago. It didn’t win, but it was fun to make.

Falling Behind

July 11, 2011
by

Dear Jonny,

I am falling behind in a lot of areas of my life. Exercise, book reading, work, this blog, and more. I know I should do something about it, but it seems there are just not enough hours in the day. I wish I could have one day that was just unlimited. That way I could catch up with everything and be ready for the next day.

But at least I can start to catch up a bit on this blog. Here is a cool picture from the Berlin Wall.

Slowly catching up,

Patrick
